Community and outreach
The Garden Museum provides an ongoing outreach programme to the local community. This includes primary schools, a nursery and children’s centre as well as a gardening project at a local doctors’ surgery. The programme is aimed at encouraging children, their families and adult members of the local community to garden and learn about how plants grow. An associated aim is to encourage enjoyment and appreciation of the natural environment and promote well being.
The Schools and Community Officer runs weekly gardening clubs in two schools near to the museum, Archbishop Sumner Primary School and Vauxhall Primary School. Outreach sessions at Lambeth primary schools further afield have also been undertaken in 2011 and these have included seed sowing sessions and planting fruit trees with children and parents.
Themes covered in the gardening clubs include growing food, flowers and herbs but also wildlife habitats, life cycles, sustainability, food preparation /cooking and art /craft activities. The sessions are designed to be seasonal, educational and fun.
During Adult Learner’s Week in 2011 the Garden Museum ran a day-long drop-in gardening surgery at a local doctors' practice. This launched a series of weekly drop-in sessions to create a garden at the surgery over the next three years. The Garden Museum also took part in Morley College’s Family Fun Day in May 2011 and ran Magic Bean sessions for children and families.
In addition to our outreach projects the Museum also runs a series of family-friendly events under the umbrella of the Horticultural Programme. For current events please click on the link above.
